Indivisible: Moorpark College Art Students

I am pleased to present square number 106 created by art student Danielle C. from Professor Erika Lizée's Gallery Practices class at Moorpark College:

Kindred Being, ink and collage on paper, 2018.

This work was shown at the Moorpark College Art Gallery this past April along with the existing Indivisible Project squares.

About this piece, Danielle writes: "Representing unity, I create a "diagram" of a human heart protected by lungs created as butterfly wings.  No two butterflies are the same, symbolizing uniqueness of humanity.  I choose the wings to be metaphorical since they surround the heart: on the outside we are different.  The heart is depicted realistically: we are all united on the inside."

Stronger Together, acrylic on canvas, 2018.

This work was shown at the Moorpark College Art Gallery this past April along with the existing Indivisible Project squares, and it is another wonderful reminder that through unity we have strength.

Lux's description for this piece is as follows:  "In the face of difficult times and adversity, it becomes more important than ever to support each other and work together.  The only way to fight oppressive forces is to unify against them, and unity is more important than ever."

Per below, I am pleased to present square number 104 created by student Kori L. from Professor Erika Lizée's Gallery Practices class at Moorpark College:

This work was shown at the Moorpark College Art Gallery this past April along with the existing Indivisible Project squares.

Keeping with the theme from yesterday's post, Kori's work also addresses person-to-person connectivity, walking in another person's shoes, so to speak, and expressing empathy for our fellow human beings.

Below is Kori's description of the work:

"My drawing represents lending a hand to anyone in need, showing humanity and unity.  You never know the struggles others go through, and it is important to reach out to people"

Indivisible: Moorpark College Art Students

In April, I had the pleasure of presenting the Indivisible Project at Moorpark College Art Gallery in Moorpark, CA.  Professor Erika Lizée's  Gallery Practices class not only installed the existing squares, but they also created new squares for the project.

Per below, I am pleased to present square number 103 created by student  Ben G.:

 Everybody has a Fan, heat transfer on paper, 2018.

This wonderful piece illustrates the disconnect or isolation that we can create, sometimes without knowing that we are retreating into ourselves and far away from those who care.

Here is Ben's description of his work:

"This piece refers to the humanity and morality of human interaction. We are all going through something at one point or another, sometimes we have to let people in instead of push people away from ourselves. It's super easy to drown in a teacup, but it's just as easy to call a friend to help you out."

Indivisible: Kristine Hatanaka's high school art class

I am so pleased to post square number 102 created by Grace, a student from Kristine Hatanaka's art class from Culver City High School Academy of Visual and Performing Arts:

 Pencil, pen and marker on paper, 2018.

The image shows one winged figure (perhaps an angel) holding out a bandage to another winged figure who appears to have an injured wing.  The writing above says, "Who are we to ignore the suffering of others?"  Indeed.  Grace's image is so appropriate for our times. Empathy and compassion are two of the most important qualities that demonstrate our humanity.

Indivisible: Moorpark College Art Gallery

I am so proud that the Indivisible Project was presented at the Moorpark College Art Gallery!  Professor Erika Lizée and her Gallery Practice Class hung all 155 squares in the gallery space.  The students also took part in the project and created their own squares which were showcased on a nearby walls.  (I will post their works individually soon.) The project was presented as part of their Multicultural Day celebration. See some of the photos below for the installation, and many thanks to Professor Lizée and her incredible class!

Indivisible: Kristine Hatanaka's high school art class

I am so pleased to post square number 101 created by Michelle, a student from Kristine Hatanaka's art class from Culver City High School Academy of Visual and Performing Arts:

 Colored pencil on paper.

As the March for Our Lives event is happening, Michelle's image seemed a very appropriate and timely one to post.  Note the signs in the background: "Yo Soy Un Dreamer" and what appears to be a "DACA" sign. I hope everyone chooses to be socially aware and civiclly minded, supporting these very loud and powerful young voices that are pushing and propelling us forward.
