Indivisible: a collaborative art project

I am proposing a group collaborative project titled Indivisible.  I am inviting anyone who would like to participate to create a 12"x 12" square of art or writing that demonstrates any or all of the following:

Unity
Civility
Morality
Humanity
Hope
Decency
Humor

These squares will be mounted onto fabric, and then sewn into a bigger work, quilt-like style.  I envision this final work to be very large - 14' x 48'- the size of a standard billboard. The intent of this piece is to not only bring as many of us together as possible but also to serve as a larger statement of us as a community and as a nation.

This project is to be a positive step forward for all people to participate in regardless of race, gender, creed, color or political affiliation.  We have heard and keep hearing about the divisiveness of our current political spectrum as well as the division of our country. Let's prove that wrong.

Details:

Anyone is allowed to participate in this project; it is meant to be inclusive and not limited to artists or adults.  Please feel free to share this project and get your family, friends and neighbors involved.

Most any material and technique can be used to create your 12"x12" artwork - sewing, collage, painting, drawing, photography, writing, mixed media, etc.  Please keep in mind that these individual squares will be mounted to fabric and displayed in a group.

For those in Los Angeles, I will collect these artworks from you directly.  For those outside the Los Angeles area, please mail your artwork to me.  Email me at sophia.allison@gmail.com, and I will send you my mailing address.

As finished squares are given to me, they will be documented and posted to this blog and other social media. With permission, participants' names and materials will posted as well.

I am working on finding a location (or multiple locations) that are open to the public and civic engagement that would be willing to display this work. I will keep you posted.

In the near future, I will host workshops so we can get together and work on this project. Feel free to host a workshop at your location as well. Document your progress and workshops, and send pictures too.

My goal is to collect (672) 12"x 12" squares for this project. However, I would love to collect twice as many squares- (1,344) -so that the finished work can be displayed hanging and both sides can viewed.

Razie Razoon

Razie Razoon is another comic that Matt and I worked on together. (Again, he wrote the story, and I drew the images.) This is a brief 2-page story about a human and alien employed as sanitation workers, and it touches on the discrimination that the human encounters in the alien's city. I didn't finish the drawings for the second panel, but the lettering was completed, so the story can still be read.

Elizabeth, Fat Girl

Back in 2003, my husband Matt and I collaborated on a few comic book stories.  He wrote them, and I drew them.  I am a fan of comics, especially off-the-beaten-path stories. As I am not a comic book artist by any stretch of the imagination (drawing and lettering comics takes special skills I have never developed), I only completed one of the stories: Elizabeth, Fat Girl. As you will see, the drawing is stiff.  I borrowed heavily from sources like Daniel Clowes' Ghost World and the Hernandez Brothers' incredible Love & Rockets series.
