Indivisible: Kristine Hatanaka's high school art class

I am thrilled to post lovely square number 52, a terrific work created by Harper, a student in Kristine Hatanaka's art class from Culver City High School Academy of Visual and Performing Arts:

This beautiful painting echoes the idea that we must take care of the earth for children's (and everyone's) future. When I look at this piece, I think it is very timely considering what has been in the news recently regarding the current administration's views on environmental protections, climate change and the EPA. It is comforting to know that many states (including California) take climate change seriously and are working hard to continue to provide people with clean air and water. I am so excited to present square number 50, created by Lismary, a student in Kristine Hatanaka's art class from Culver City High School Academy of Visual and Performing Arts:

Yesterday, I had the honor of receiving 39 contributions to the Indivisible Project from high school students at Culver City High School.  I was quite moved by the depth, skill level and variety of issues that these thoughtful young people brought to their work.  I am excited to be showcasing it here, and I want to extend a huge thanks to their teacher Kristine Hatanaka, for encouraging her students to be a part of this project. They are making their voices heard.

Indivisible: Stephanie Fahnestock

I am very pleased to present square number 49 created by Stephanie Fahnestock:

This wonderful work is very dynamic; I call it "Hope with Heart." Stephanie created this work at the workshop offered at the home of Los Angeles friend Valerie Butler.  Many terrific works came out of that workshop and from the sounds of it, a fine time was had by all. Indivisible: Valerie Butler

I am proud to present square number 48 created by Los Angeles friend and artist Valerie Butler:

Collage on paper, 2017.

This collage speaks to the actual make-up of our country - many different people from many different places - immigrants immigrating- to create a rich and wonderful collective of nationalities, ethnicities, races, and peoples as well as their traditions, stories and histories they carried to this land.

Valerie organized a wonderful workshop at her home for this project, inviting her friends and their families to create squares.  Adults as well as children participated, and the results are mighty fine. I will be posting all of these works in the weeks to come, so please stay tuned!

Indivisible: Janne Larsen's 2D students

I am pleased to present square number 47, a beautiful image created by a high school student in Janne Larsen's 2-D art class at Pilgrim School:

This intricate work which utilizes repetitive, organic layered shapes borders on abstraction. But if one pulls back from the detailed drawing, the word "Hope" can be seen emerging from the shapes. It's a clever and thoughtful work created by a young person, and I hope to see more of these pieces coming my way. Please keep sending your squares to the Indivisible Project.

Indivisible: Brenda Podemski

So proud to present square number 43 created by LA friend and wonderfully creative individual Brenda Podemski:

Metro, knitting, 2016.

This beautifully knitted work is titled Metro.  The lines represent the various train and subway paths of Los Angeles' Metro system.  Additionally, the work is based on a Celtic knot motif. Celtic knots usually reflect a spiritual unity or an interconnectedness that is unbreakable. I love the layers of meaning in this gorgeous piece.
